Baandee Lake

Moonrise over Baandee Lake

Just spent an incredible couple of days relaxing and camping at Baandee Lake in Western Australia! This hidden gem is a salt lake, with little water at the moment, so no swimming, but the stark white landscape and surrounding bushland are unreal.

Perfect for a peaceful escape, or a rest up before hitting the Nullarbor.

There are plenty of spaces along the shoreline to park up, right by the lake’s edge—free camping, no fees!

Night skies were insane, with stars popping like you’re in a planetarium, although a full moon both nights limited the depth of view.

A fire ban until May put the mockers on a campfire, so we just soaked in the silence. Tough gig. 😋

The site was initially developed by an Inland Water Ski Club and the Kellerberrin Shire built an ablution block and some shelters (in need of restoration). It seems the club no longer exists, and tge place is now sadly neglected – a shame. There’s loads of potential here.

With a little planning and maintenance to grade out some bays, it could be impressive.

The Road in is corrugated with some potholes and water carving out a path of its own. However it’s only a few klics.

Enter via Sky Lake Road and not the brown tourist sign to Baandee off the Great Eastern Highway to avoid confusion.

The shire has provided several bins and they’re emptied frequently.

Toilets and cold showers need TLC – and bring some grabbers to clean up after the grubs.

There aren’t any insect issues and we thought mozzies would quickly form a welcoming squadron – apart from hordes of flies attempting to crawl into every visible orifice (expected).

Great for birdwatching—saw heaps of galahs and wrens, the odd annoying crow and a few emus wandering nearby.

Tip: Bring water and supplies; it’s remote, with Kellerberrin 20 mins away for essentials.

The Road in’s gravel and needs grading but it’s fine for caravans, even a slow 2WD would have no issues.

Anyone else camped here? Share your tips!
