Wooramel River Retreat

We left the Overlander Roadhouse ar checkout time, but of the 22 vans that were the night before, we were relaxed and the last to leave with a blistering 80kms to cover.

Tossed up where we were headed, apart from north, and decided a stay at Wooramel Station’s River Retreat. Flat ground, well sort of, but when we came to park the van, we could see it was a bit unlevel. However, this did not deter us, so without leveling the van, we unhitched, ready for a few nights stay.

Very quiet, neighbours not jammed in next to you. It still amuses me that the river were next to, is upside down. Even the coffee shop/come snacks is named Upside Down Cafe. Because all we’re looking at is sand.  It’s very wide and long, but no water. Or so you think.

The water flows underground, around 30 metres, and the water is visible on top of the sand about three times a year, after good rains upstream. So we don’t think we’ll be seeing it this time.

It reminds us of the Todd River in Alice Springs, just waiting for a boat race.

Weather has been kind, but a few clouds today, but think the threatening heavy rain will pass us by, or so we thought!

Heavy rain was predicted a couple of days ago with high winds, so we decided to stay another 2 nights and ride the storm out. As it turns out, the extra two days is what we needed.

We did have some more heavy showers and at one stage, the wind blew so hard, we were severely rocked in the van, hoping that it wouldn’t topple over. Time to start packing up and head off.

We’re 124kms from Carnarvon, so we’ll call in for supplies, and a few days to have a good nosey around. Weather is not going to be kind to us again with high winds, gusting around 60+ kms. But still, at the moment, only light winds and no rain.

We travelled north to escape the winds and rain and cold, but they have decided to come with us, and we’ve now got the winter gear out again!
